Editing and finaliseing production

The first cut of the film went well and had a good flow to it. However there was key parts that where missing like the most critical; and key background to the storyline the interrogator. This cause the need for another filming day and the new footage will be in twined with the old base that was created to solve little niggles. The plan is it cut in the missing film and then decided what is needed to finish it or just to give it the final bit of editing flare.


One thing that was highlighted when someone watched our film, was it's long dialog.
This is something that i will have to work on whilst keeping the story line intact.

Here are a selection of feedback's that we gathered, which highlight these dialog issues;

Sam: Its a good storyline and i get the concept but by the end i was just turning off, shorten it !!!!!!!

Steve: Way too long and it doesn't really say anything thats relevant, and i started to lose interest.

Lilly: I liked the location and the use of camera shots, however in places the dialog was rather long, and dominates the scene.

Max and Becky interrogation Interview

Max: I have been told you are the terrorist scrum, Amy Coving
(Becky tapping on table)
Becky: Don’t know what you’re talking about
Max: Maybe I could jog your memory
(Max handed the briefcase by Bartek)
Becky: What is this?
Max: This is a package that we know that you took delivery of yesterday. Sniffer dogs have indicated that this box has traces of explosives on it. Can you explain to me why?
Becky: I have nothing to do with this briefcase.
Max: Are you trying to tell me that my eyes are lying to me, as the 25 years of me doing this job, they have never let me down.
Becky: You better get your eyes checked
Max: I know my eyes are fine. Just leaves the fact that you are lying to me.
Becky: Look, I don’t know anything, I don’t even know where I am or why I am here.
Max: Well, you are at the Hotman Group and you’re suspected to have been involved in terrorist activities and we intend to get the truth out of you>
(Max opens the briefcase)
Max: Well this is enough explosives to flatten the Empire State Building. What do you say to this?
Becky: All I got told was to pick up the package
Max: Have you been told any other information such as codes, numbers, main places for the cause you are working for.
Becky: They told me one code.
Max: And what was that?
Becky: It was ‘the waters of life’, I assume that is a code for something.
Max: ‘The waters of life’, I will have to work with that. Although you may have helped us you will still have to be sent to prison for at least a couple of years. Guards take her away!

Costumes and props

Costumes are suits and organery clothes
props are phones and intell on paper to make it look offical.

Location

Locations that we are planning on useing is a corridor that has lots of doors thought out it for one of the opeing shoots. After this we are planning on useing office to give the offical look we are after. For the intence scnes we are looking at offputting locations to make the audence feel at unease like the cast is trying to gave that effect.    

Potential Target Audience

Our film is an action thriller, and we will want to try and aim to the same target audience who enjoy this genre. Our film is a hybrid; the thriller aspects will influence the bulk of the storyline with the action supporting a wide variety of Guns, Blood, Loud Explosions and Drugs. The main character is usually a really tough or smart hero and accompanied by an evil bad guy/terrorist.

• Ethnicity: Western Audience
• Sexuality: Primarily Straight

Story boards

 Here are the storyboards that sets out what we are aiming to get from the filming. There is clear instructions in the storyline of the opring sequence and what effect we want from the filming and the storyline as its important that the transitions are clear so the viewer understands where the storyline is going. The most important transition is when detective bray goes from the office to the informed location in a hurry with back up to try and shut down the terrorist plot. 

In these shots it establishes the location and introduces the
main role walking to the office to talk with his partner 

Here bray has receved inteligence about a plot
 and forts through it to then go to his first leed.

In these shot you see bray interrorgating a suspct that has
conections to the terrorist ring. Bray puts all the evedence
together to try and sus where the ring is baced to take it out.

 sequence with bray calling for
 back up rushing out to meet the team and finnishes with
bray kicking down the door of the hideaway.  





Pitch/Storyline/Camera script

Opening Shot - CCTV camera footage, various streets views etc

First Scene
Hard as nails Private Investigator Bray (Max) walks through a federal building, slamming doors as he goes, walking toward his partners office. (Filmed from Low vantage points to emphasise dominance)

Bray gets to the office and takes a seat (dialogue exchanged about new intelligence)
Bartek enters, handing over the new intelligence on the case (with shot of just a little of the body no face). Then exits. Bray sifts through the papers quickly, and then exits the office, heading for the door.

Second Scene
Bray arrives at another building, entering a room where a girl sits on a chair.
He then proceeds to interrogate the girl tirelessly (various shots cut together to show time passing)
She eventually gives the right information.

Bray then sits in his office looking at various papers, looking tired and defeated. (In his head he is going over and over what the girl had said to him, we will actually put this on the sound track)
All of a sudden he has  moment of clarity, and jumps out of his seat.
He grabs the phone and punches the number in, screaming down the phone he orders for backup with plenty of ammo to meet him at a certain address immediately. (The scene ends with a shot of Bray slamming down the phone shot from next to the phone)

Third Scene
Cut straight from the last scene, and have some way to conect the last scene i.e bray getting up and getting his coat and walking out of the office and the sound of slamming van doors and the sound of a van driveing away giveing a link from the last scene to the next.   This next scene filmed from inside of a door we see bray kick down a door and say something ironic and funny taking the style of james bond and 24 etc. Then cut to the opening credits in a James Bond style.

Film companies

The the company that would be most likely to make my film would be the American company MGM. This is mainly because the research that was done into the company shows that was involved with making James bond films. James bond is the style of film we want to use as inspiration to influence our film making.

Opeing sequence Comparision

The two films that we looked at was Memento and Casino Royale.
The similarities between these two is the action with a gun and also includes a murder from the offset. Another thing was the fact there was a section of action before the opening credits. There is good and bad roles. For instance Casino Royale had the bent agent. And in the memento you had a murderer. The both had flashbacks in black and white in the  opening sequence. Short spurts of dialog are present in both.

  Opening sequence had  a direct link to the rest of the film in both.
In the CR Bond achieves 00 status and this effects the rest of the film as he is higher up in the agent tree. In Memento we see a murder which effects the whole storyline as the main character spend the whole film trying to get revenge.

The effectiveness of both opening sequences it works well as openings as it hooks the audience from the being and sets the tone of the whole film.

Memento Opening Sequence

This opening sequence is very different to most but has a very good effect on the audience as it starts with a murder in reverse with a Polaroid picture as the scene was photographed. This confirms to the audience that things are going in reverse and you see the colour coming out of the picture and then role back into the camera. This keeps the viewer questioning whats going on. The next strange thing that went on was the gun jumped up into the hand of the killer. This gives a super natural look and makes you question why is the film going backwards. The fact of it going in reverse show that allot of editing went on as things don't naturally go backwards. The sound or background music was parallel to the action that was going on in this case classical instrumental music.

Opening Sequence analysis

As  part of the research we looked at many different opening sequence films,  that followed the genre that we are planing on working on.  The one that was most useful was Casino Royal and also i had a deem understanding with this film the content was about the war for water.  The opening sequence contained a car pulling up next to a building and a shifty looking character wearing a Russian hat getting out of the car then rides the lift to the required floor all shots are taken from below to make you feel interior. The next shot is this shifty person walking into a room and he sees that something is missing the angle is low and is from the perspective of bond and with the things in front of the camera giving the sense of hiding. They exchange dialog and then it flashes to a previous time where Bond kills his contact this is in a different black and wight to the being. After this its back to previous confrontation and the salient finds gun without bullets his drops and bond kills him dead. Finally the classic credits run.  The way that this opening sequence grabs the interest of the viewer one things that hooks the audience is the way that cast talk with a rather humorous tone even thought its a very serious situation. An example is  "If mam thought i was bent, she would send a 00"

Mise-en-Scene

*Establishing shot: Dark black and wight dark windows unknown building and lit from below
*Slanted camera angel: puts you on edge used in the lift to make you feel uneasy
*Character: wearing official looking suit and a dodgy looking Russian hat. Shifty eyes gives the sense he is up to something.
*Low vantage point obscured by take give the feeling of hiding.
*Single light: Cant really make out that's in  the room.
*Where the point of view camera was is now where Bond is placed.
* The colours change from the simple black and wight to a brown tinge to show its from another time.
*They used a close-up to show the realisation that his gun is not loaded.
*To then flashes to Bond with a gun that then shots him and see a short shot of a family picture.
*Finally the classic Bond credits role.

Public Views

As far as the views of the general public seemed to be universally positive throughout everyone that we asked,.However the thing that was the closest to constructive criticism was the fact they didn't have anything to base their views on as I didn't have any way to show the clip that was already produced.  Another point that was brought to our attention was the fact that our story line was very complex with the ending being the opening title sequence  and then the main bulk of the story thereafter is how it got there. 

Conventions of this genre

In this genre the conventions are atmospheric music at key points to increase the tension and suspense of the storyline and give the sense something is about to happen before it does. Another thing in this style is there is always a very headstrong character that always has an answer for everything and has to be slowed down to stand back and look at the situation properly. This is most evident in American TV shows like lie to me, 24 and Chuck. In all of there examples there is fast editing setting the pace of the show and the pace of the action. The most prevalent props in this style are weapons smartly dressed males and quick dialog and shouting to show dominance of the role and importance of the situation.   

Ideas for opening sequences

I had the idea of carrying on with the american style of tv for the opening sequence of our film. For this i used my photo editing skills to make a well put together picture with all of the main cast and that would be used for either the start or the end of the opening sequence.

This has been used in things like the real hustle The hustle and most drama style tv show.

Editing style

When it came to our editing style we used a blading editing technique. This meant that i cut up the raw footage with allot of vigor.

This latter allowed  us to get the right effect with the clips and video effects like the 'old video' style.

 

This was used to give a clip the look of CCTV footage giving a menacing shouldn't be seeing this look.

Genre style

Where the idea started from the idea was basically wanting a dramatic investigator storyline. We had a meeting as a group and worked on a spider diagram and thought about story lines of a PI,Anti-terrorism,terrorists attacks, meeting of some kind and coming home from school/work and finalised on hostage interrogation witch later developed into terrorist interroation. And used the costume style of a smart suave secret agent by wearing a suit to finish off the style.   

Inspiration for Story line

The main idea of our production came from 'Lie To Me' as its got a good storyline with twists and turns and the style of editing is very effective with the different situations the characters are in . Our lead actor plays a role rather like the major one in this series and it has helped to create our own storyline with it

Full task Research

What I'm hoping to get out of this is to fully understand the codes and conventions in the genre that we are basing our filming on and hopefully create a more impressive feeling to out films that are more accurate portrayal of the characters and the story line.

Full task and follow up story

The main idea of our main task is to make a back story for this first task to open up the story to creat more in deth intrest in the story line and cariter development.

Filming day

The filming if our preliminary was well thought out and went smoothly as we thought carefully how we wanted each shot to look and how would be edited together. The set up when very well and the effects we wanted to get with the effect of a very scary intimidating atmosphere which was created with ease. Following the filming the editing was a long process however the result came out very well.

In this media AS level I have worked on the preliminary task and have completed what was necessary to complete it from the mind map to bring up the final idea which was then story board about what shots, cast and props needed to shot the film to start the task.
